Sony Interactive Entertainment Acquires Insomniac Games After Years of Shared Success
Insomniac Games, the developer behind beloved icons such as Spyro the Dragon, has been acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). This comes after the massive success that Marvel’s Spider-Man brought to the company as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, boasting 13.2 million copies shipped worldwide. The studio has dropped other amazing projects throughout its fourteen-year history, spread over Sony’s PlayStation, Microsoft Windows, and the Xbox One.
Ted Price, CEO of Insomniac Games, has candidly spoken to the media regarding acquisition offers from a number of publishers since back in 2008. The developer always remained steadfast in its position to maintain independence:
“We have a very good thing going at Insomniac right now. We are continuing to enjoy success with our titles….I think I, and most other people at Insomniac, are very happy with where we are.”
This freedom resulted in games such as Sunset Overdrive, which was received well by critics and published by Xbox Game Studios. Many fans were speculating if the insane third-person action game would remain an Xbox exclusive after Sony’s acquisition, but Insomniac Games was quick to clarify that they own the Sunset Overdrive IP. So while the current game will remain on PC and Xbox, there is a high possibility of a future sequel (or prequel) coming to Sony’s PlayStation.
Since their first project back in 1996, a Doom-inspired shooter called Disruptor, Insomniac Games has proven to be a valuable partner to Sony Interactive Entertainment. The relationship between PlayStation and Insomniac Games has been fruitful, and the newfound acquisition will provide a perfect avenue for some of their most exciting games yet.
